IV fluids and tonicity
Tonicity describes how a solution affects cell volume through osmosis. A hypotonic environment can make red blood cells swell; a hypertonic environment can make them shrink. Osmolarity counts dissolved particles, but tonicity depends on which solutes effectively remain outside the cell.
Question to carry into class: Why are osmolarity and tonicity related but not identical?
